The vast majority of very early telephones were made from wood – or at least encased in wood, with brass fittings. All original GPO phones had their brassware painted black – an important feature when checking these early collectables, as a large portion of the market may be reproductions.

Advice for collectors

The biggest problem when searching for original wooden phones is knowing how to tell a true original – a difficult task. See this excellent article on how to discern original wooden telephones from fakes or reproductions.
