Model 500

The Model 500 was first introduced in 1949, and it soon established itself as the standard Bell System phone, retaining that status for a generation. It eventually became the most widely produced dial phone ever – a real design classic.

The Model 500 featured a new handset – the G1 – a sturdier and more angular handset than the preceding F1 from the 1930s. It was also a larger phone than any of the previous models, the extra room in the casing being occupied with the improved electronics, and the innovation of a ringer with and adjustable bell.

Advice for collectors

The Western Electric Model 500 was the first Western Electric phone to be mass produced in a wide range of colours other than black. With previous models a few alternatives had been available for a high premium, and in very limited numbers. Now Bell Systems offered the Model 500 in a wide range of enticingly named ‘designer’ colours, including Lemon Yellow, Harvest Gold, Chocolate Brown, Rose Pink, Cherry Red, Lime Green, Avocado, Turquoise and more than a dozen other colours.
